Communities come together to remember the life of a loved one with St Luke’s

Hundreds of people support St Luke’s by dedicating a light in memory of a loved one.

Hundreds of people from the Harrow and Brent community came along to St Luke’s annual Light Up A Life event on Sunday 4 December which took place in St Luke’s grounds. It was an opportunity for visitors whether they are already a supporter of St Luke’s or have never been involved before, to come together and remember or celebrate the memory of a loved one by dedicating a light on St Luke’s tree. Visitors were welcomed with an event programme, a candle, free refreshments and mince pies and they had the opportunity to see a special display of all Light Up A Life tributes.

Representatives from different faith groups and a variety of St Luke’s staff said a reading or performed at the event and we would particularly like to say a special thanks to Rabbi Bergson, Pinner Synagogue; Minister Jamie Kidd, Pinner Free Church and the Harrow Youth Brass Band for taking part. The event culminated with St Luke’s Chairman, Mike Redhouse who switched on the lights on the Hospice tree, and those that attended switched on their individual candles in memory or in celebration of their loved ones.

St Luke’s volunteer, Sarah Pundit says, ‘It think the event was a very good gesture from the Hospice. It brings a lot of people who are recently bereaved or have lost people in the past to come together and raise the awareness of the Hospice’s work. It brings close families who have not been back to the Hospice after losing their loved ones there, to come and reflect and give a minutes silence. It was very well organised and well attended. Even my neighbours felt it was a very moving and nice service.’

St Luke’s Light Up A Life campaign has raised over £15,000 so far and donations are still coming in. Over £400 was raised from the generosity of the people who attended the event. We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported this year's Light Up A Life. Every light that shines this year will help St Luke’s to continue to provide specialist end of life care to thousands of people and their families in Harrow and Brent.
