Sameer Khurjekar recently completed the British 10k run for St Luke’s in July and he is now going to be joining over 17,000 runners at London’s Run to the Beat music half marathon this September. Run to the Beat is a unique concept which has 14 music stations playing carefully selected music to help and motivate runners around a 13 mile course. Taking part not only improves your running performance but it will develop your knowledge of how powerful music can be to your success in running, both starting and keeping you going.

Local GP, Sameer will be taking on the Run to the Beat challenge in aid of St Luke’s because of his experience of completing a student doctor training course at St Luke’s. Sameer says, ‘I had a first rate experience with Dr Charles Daniels and the team during my six months in post. The hands on training in symptom control, end of life care and developing a wide range of communicative skills was second to none. One of the most useful skills I developed was being able to have difficult conversations with patients and their families at St Luke's. Following on from this we were able to help them to plan ahead, allowing them to maintain their dignity. I continue to use these skills day to day as a GP.

During my time at St Luke's it was clear to see how great a job the whole team at St Luke's does. However it was even clearer that the work could not be done without appropriate funding. After I left St Luke's I wanted to make sure that I kept contributing. Participating in an event like this really helps to spread awareness of the important role that St Luke's plays in the local community and encourages people to open their wallets!
I loved the idea of a challenge which would make me work hard to get fitter! I have enjoyed previous runs in Central London for St Luke's and I am really looking forward to the motivating atmosphere of London's Music Half Marathon. To prepare for the run I’ve been spending a lot of time in the gym before and between surgeries and running on other days. And yes I've had to beat the temptation to have all those extra desserts!’
