The 22nd annual long distance sponsored walk, one of the highlights of our year, will take place over the Bank Holiday weekend, from Thursday 27th April to Monday 1st May.
The total distance for the five days will be between 70 and 75 miles so, if you like a challenge, you can sign up to walk the full distance. If you prefer to take things at a more leisurely pace you can choose shorter options of around 7 or 12 miles per day. Our friendly back-up team will be on hand to cheer you on and help if you get into difficulties.
The route is made up of three long-distance footpaths: the West Devon Way, the Two Castles Trail and the Tamar Valley Discovery Trail, which are known collectively as the West Devon Triangle
. Our walk takes in the beautiful scenery of the western edge of Dartmoor, the river valleys and open downland linking the historic towns of Okehampton and Launceston, and the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty of the Tamar Valley. The walk will start just outside Plymouth, pass through Tavistock and Okehampton, and finish at Calstock. Maps and walk notes will be provided.
Accommodation and Cost
Accommodation on the walk will be at the 4-star Holiday Inn (standard) or the 2-star Travelodge Derriford Hotel (budget), both in Plymouth. Cost for 4 nights, based on two people sharing a double or twin room, is £375 for the Holiday Inn and £275 for the Derriford. This includes bed, breakfast and evening meal, travel from and return to London and all transfers during the walk. Don’t worry if you haven’t arranged to share with someone; we will team you up with another walker.
On registration a deposit of £100 is payable, with the rest to be paid by 31 March, or at our final information evening (date to be advised).
You are asked to raise a target sponsorship amount of £500 (minimum £300). Every penny that you raise will make a real difference to our patients and their families.
To help you prepare for the walk and meet some of your fellow walkers, we have arranged a series of led training walks. Some are very close to home and almost all are within an hour’s journey of the Harrow area. We will start with some short walks and gradually increase the distances over the weeks leading up to the West Devon Triangle walk. We hope you will join as many as you can to build up your fitness and stamina.
There will be no charge for registered walkers, and a suggested donation of £3 is requested from other participants. Anyone is welcome on these walks, so come along and join us. Please see our separate web page for up-to-date details of the training walks:
