Day Care Unit

The Day Therapy Unit aims to provide holistic care to patients with life limiting illness, looking at their physical, pyschological, social and spiritual needs. We aim to give them total support by using the diverse skills of our multidisciplinary team which includes doctors, nurses, social workers and therapists. This support is also extended to families or people who play an important part in their lives.

The role of Day Care is evolving and is an important component of hospice care. Day Care may offer out-patient treatment, emotional and pyschosocial support through nurse and doctor assessment and treatment, complementary therapies, physiotherapy, family services, relaxation therapy and hairdressing services as well as considerable peer support. Art and music can also play an important role in helping patients to come to terms with their illness. The Unit is also well supported by a dedicated group of volunteers.

Many patients enjoy the social aspect of Day Care, meeting and sharing experiences with other people in a similar situation.

St Luke's Day Care: first impressions

Picture of comp therapy massaging feet.

'St Luke's was not what I expected. I thought that it would feel more like a hospital. It is very homely: day care is more like a very posh, comfortable living room than an institution. When I first arrived and the nurse talke to through my programme of therapies, I was surprised by how much was on offer. I hadn't expected that things like acupuncture, aromatherapy and massage would be on offer. I think that it will also help me to have a chance to talk to other patients. I am a very friendly person and I will be looking forward to my Wednesdays

My advice to anyone who is unsure about hospice care is to talk to the St Luke's professionals about what the hospice can offer. You can be sure that they will listen to you and work out something that suits your circumstances'
