St Luke’s Hospice values the contribution young people make through their volunteering. We have over 300 young people apply to volunteer with us throughout the year! Volunteering with St Luke’s is about fun, meeting new people, learning new skills and be part of and contributing to a local cause supporting patients and their families.
Stay connected to St Luke’s Hospice; follow us on Facebook and Twitter, drop us an email on volunteering@stlukes-hospice.org
Please spread the word of your volunteering by telling parents, relatives and teachers. Tell them how you are making a positive difference by giving your time to St Luke's Hospice.

I am 16 -18, where can I volunteer?
In our 13 shops: This is a great way of gaining new skills and building your confidence. Our 13 shops are a very busy retail environment so we need enthusiastic, committed young people to help us. You will be based on the shop floor and also in the sorting area.
The Saturday shifts get snapped up very quickly, so if you have an afternoon or morning off during the week, this time slot will really helps us find a shift for you. Please see our Shops list
Helping with our fundraising events: young people help us with one-off events or join us as part of the fundraising volunteer team. Some of the tasks you will be asked to do are; to set up and clear up at events, man stalls, serve refreshments, register participants, and help in a host of other ways.
We are also seeking young people on our event committees. If you have plenty of ideas and enjoy seeing the success of a great event then this may be an opportunity for you.
For some fundraising volunteer tasks you will need to be 18 and over.
I do not have any volunteer experience?
You do not need experience to join us!
We recognise and understand that as a young person you may not have volunteer experience therefore we want to encourage you and value your offer to help. Volunteering will help you meet new people, improve your work based skills and support your personal statements for further education.
In return, we need our volunteers to be committed, punctual and respect staff and other volunteers.
Can I volunteer just over the summer or Easter Holidays?
We require a commitment of 6 months; you may be free over the summer holidays but we require a continued commitment from you after your holidays. It may be helpful to find out your school/college timetable before you contact us and this will help us place you with minimum disruption to us and you. It may be helpful to discuss your application to volunteer with one of your teachers or your head of year; they may be able to tell you if you have free afternoon during the week.
Sorry, currently we do not run short-term volunteering in the shop.
What are the age requirements?
There are age restrictions for some volunteering roles in the UK. Volunteers seeking long term volunteering must be the “minimum school leaving age” (MSLA), except those working with patients who must be 18.
I am on the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme and I would like to volunteer with you?
Students completing the Duke of Edinburgh Award who wish to gain volunteer experience may only work in the shops (with the respective Shop Manager’s agreement). These students may be under the “minimum school leaving age”. Our positions under this scheme get filled up quickly so please apply early to avoid disappointment. If there is no position available please check back at a later time.
Work experience
We work closely with a work experience Agency and provide work experience in our Charity Shops through this scheme for schools across Brent and Harrow. Unfortunately, we are not able to offer work experience opportunities within the Hospice.
I would like a reference for my volunteering, is this possible?
Yes, we write references to volunteers who have actively volunteered with us for six months (minimum of 26 shifts).
All references are written out to the concerned party directly and not to the individual volunteer or ‘To whom it may concern’. The reference will go directly from us to the party concerned i.e. College, Employer.
I would like to fundraise for St Luke’s.
We welcome youth involvement in fundraising; we also encourage you to get your School or College involved. There are lots of ways in which schools can get involved with St Luke’s from organising your own fundraising, to taking part in a St Luke’s event. Find out more about how you can learn about the work of St Luke’s Hospice in our community and more information on getting involved through your school.
