History

The annual walks (or Lesley’s Walks as they are affectionately known) were organised by our beloved Lesley Dodd for 20 years, starting in 1996, when over one hundred people took part in our inaugural Hadrian’s Wall walk.  Since then, our walkers have covered thousands of miles on long-distance footpaths in all parts of the United Kingdom and beyond, including the West Highland Way, The Cleveland Way and the 2021 Lesley Dodd Memorial Walk along the Coleridge Way.  Along the way they have raised well over a million pounds to support the work of St Luke’s Hospice and forged many lasting friendships.

Some of our supporters enjoy the walking, the countryside and the company of their fellow participants so much that they return to walk and raise funds year after year, but there is also always a friendly welcome for newcomers.  Accommodation and local transport are organised for you; all you have to do is choose your distance, turn up and walk.

St Luke’s Hospice Annual Walk 2025

Join us from Friday, 23 May to Monday, 26 May 2025, for an unforgettable long-distance walking adventure along the Peak Way in the beautiful Peak District. Over four days, you’ll experience some of the UK’s most stunning landscapes while supporting St Luke’s Hospice.

Stay in the charming village of Thorpe at The Peveril of the Peak House, a property run by HF Holidays and named after Sir Walter Scott’s 1823 novel. Nearby attractions include the iconic Dovedale Stepping Stones, the breathtaking views from Thorpe Cloud, and the dramatic Twelve Apostles, best admired from Lover’s Leap.

As the UK’s first National Park, the Peak District is steeped in history. Walkers and nature lovers hold this area dear, especially due to the 1932 Kinder Scout Mass Trespass, a protest that led to the establishment of the ‘right to roam’ on privately owned land.

Our walk focuses on the southern section of the National Park, known as the White Peak. This area is characterized by rolling limestone hills, dry stone walls, vibrant meadows, and clear streams. Along the route, you’ll pass through picturesque towns and villages like Matlock, Ashbourne, Milldale, Ashford-in-the-Water, Buxton, and more.
