Caring for People in Harrow & Brent

Support for Families and Carers

St Luke’s Hospice is committed to the development of services for the carers and families of our patients. Knowing those close to them are also being supported can offer great peace of mind to a patient.

Are you a carer?

A carer is someone ‘of any age who provides unpaid support to family or friends who could not manage without this help’ www.carersuk.org.

Why is it important to recognise if you are a carer?

Those who do not recognise themselves as carers usually do not get the support they need and are entitled to. Trying to balance the role of carer with other responsibilities, e.g. work and family can affect your own quality of life and health. Being recognised as a carer can help you get advice and support from the government, local council/community, and we can support you to get help to meet your own needs and those of the person you care for.

Welfare Benefits and Practical Support

Many families find their income is reduced when someone is seriously ill. We can provide practical help, information and advice regarding:

  • Welfare benefits
  • Care Packages
  • Housing
  • Transport and mobility e.g. disabled parking badges

We help identify which benefits you may be entitled to, fill out applications forms and signpost you to other services that may benefit you and your family.

Advocacy

Instead of dealing with everything yourself, it can be useful to have someone to advocate and liaise on your behalf with other agencies and organisations e.g. Social Services and Benefits Agencies. We can help and support you along the way.

Supporting children

Children and young people may also need help in understanding illness and the changes it has caused. Our team can work with you to assess their needs and guide you in supporting younger members of your family.

Spiritual Care

It is important to us that you and those close to you feel comfortable to express and practice your spiritual and religious needs. We do not know what is important to every individual, so please feel free to discuss this with us. At the hospice, we have a quiet room for contemplation and prayer and a range of resources that you are welcome to borrow while your family are being looked after here.
