Caring for People in Harrow & Brent

Andy’s keeping St Luke’s at the heart of Hatch End

Andy Hallisey is a familiar face for many at Hatch End. He has worked at the train station for over a decade, greeting commuters and keeping things running smoothly.

Away from the platforms, Andy carries a personal story that explains why St Luke’s Hospice means so much to him.

And why he is determined to keep it at the centre of his community.

A few years ago, Andy’s mum was at the end of her life. She was bedridden and cared for at home, but Andy still needed help to cope.

“I’d ring St Luke’s when I was cracking up, when it was too much for me,” he recalls. “The support I had down the phone was fantastic.”

That kindness made a lasting impression. At a funeral, Andy collected donations for St Luke’s. And since then, he has continued to support us whenever he can.

Earlier this year, Andy applied for an Arriva Rail London charity grant on behalf of St Luke’s, which brought in a £1,000 donation.

“My colleague who used to sit on Arriva’s charity grant committee said what would strengthen it was if I volunteered. So, I went over to volunteer at the Hatch End shop so that you’d get the cheque… and I’m going to continue to volunteer. You’ve got me now.”

Although he has only been volunteering in the Hatch End shop for a couple of months, Andy’s passion runs deep.

“Hatch End is a great community and although we’re in London, it feels like a village community and that’s what I like.”

For Andy, keeping the St Luke’s shop thriving is about more than fundraising. It is about keeping the Hospice visible in everyday life.

He encourages people not only to donate but to buy something too, whether it is a book, a trinket or a piece of clothing. That, he says, is what helps keep a shop alive.

Andy may be a new volunteer, but his connection with St Luke’s is long-standing and deeply felt.

By sharing his story and leading by example, he is showing how one person’s determination can help keep St Luke’s visible and valued in the community.

Thank you, Andy — for your heart, your honesty and your support.
