Many people in St Luke’s Inpatient Unit need specialist end of life care to ease the pain they are experiencing so they can do the things they love and enjoy precious moments with their family.

David says: “My wife, Barbara (pictured left with David) endured many nights of agonising pain and after some tests the hospital consultant told her that she had a tumour. Fortunately, St Luke’s was able to arrange a bed for her at the hospice’s Inpatient Unit. As soon as we arrived, the nurse assessed her and immediately put her on morphine.
The pain began to ease straight away and she started looking brighter. From then on, she was a lot brighter.
This meant she was well enough to enjoy the hospice’s music therapy sessions and play a game of scrabble with me. Barbara’s room overlooked a rose garden and on the Tuesday before she passed away, I was able to wheel her around the beautiful garden.
St Luke’s do a fantastic job looking after people at the end of their life. Barbara’s final weeks there meant she could finally be pain free and enjoy her last weeks with her family.”

Our patient, Barbara is a wonderful example of this. She had precious moments with her family whilst we took care of her every medical need and ensured she remained pain free.
We help and involve the whole family because we know they are all going through a difficult and emotional time. Giving people excellent and compassionate support makes me feel part of their family too.
