Join us in May 2022

Join our annual long distance walking event from 27 to 31 May for a wonderful walking trip along St Oswald’s Way in Northumberland. Over 5 days you can enjoy some of the finest landscapes the UK has to offer while fundraising for St Luke’s Hospice. You will be staying in the coastal village of Alnmouth in HF Holidays’ Nether Grange Hotel, sitting within one of Northumberland’s Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This one-time 18th century granary was first converted into a large family home for the High Sheriff of Northumberland in the 19th century and then reimagined as a characterful hikers’ hotel. Many of the 36 bedrooms look out across the sea.

Steeped in history, St Oswald’s Way is a magnificent long distance route which links several of the places associated with Oswald, a seventh century king of Northumbria, who was instrumental in bringing Christianity to the area.

Our walk will focus on the central section of the route, starting just north of Hadrian’s Wall and reaching the coast near Warkworth. From there we will follow the coastal path northwards, finishing at Bamburgh, with its spectacular castle.

There is wide variety of terrain and scenery to enjoy, from moorland to forests (where you might be lucky enough to spot a red squirrel!) and from riverside paths to the pristine beaches and dunes of the coast. Along the way we will pass attractive villages, castles and ancient settlements which bear witness to the human occupation of the area through the ages.

Choose your walk

Each day there will be a choice of walking distances to suit your ability:

  • 8-12 miles daily (standard distance)
  • Up to 18 miles daily (long distance)

You will be free to walk at your own pace or join some of our experienced walkers, all of whom are friendly and welcoming.

History

The annual walks (or Lesley’s Walks as they are affectionately known) were organised by our beloved Lesley Dodd for 20 years, starting in 1996, when over one hundred people took part in our inaugural Hadrian’s Wall walk.  Since then, our walkers have covered thousands of miles on long-distance footpaths in all parts of the United Kingdom and beyond, including the West Highland Way, The Cleveland Way and the 2021 Lesley Dodd Memorial Walk along the Coleridge Way.  Along the way they have raised well over a million pounds to support the work of St Luke’s Hospice and forged many lasting friendships.

Some of our supporters enjoy the walking, the countryside and the company of their fellow participants so much that they return to walk and raise funds year after year, but there is also always a friendly welcome for newcomers.  Accommodation and local transport are organised for you; all you have to do is choose your distance, turn up and walk.

Walking Club

Our Walking Club is a great way to train for your challenge, stay fit and meet a group of like-minded individuals. Each walk is led by a friendly volunteer who will guide you on walks covering different terrains and distances.  For details of all upcoming walks, visit www.stlukestrainingwalks.org.uk.
