Reena, a friendly face when people need it most
Reena Patel volunteers as a receptionist at St Luke’s Hospice at Kenton Grange on Wednesday afternoons, balancing this with her full-time career as a solicitor.
“Although I am working, it was important for me to prioritise some time to volunteer,” she says. “It’s nice to give back to my local community.”
Reena, originally from Kenton and now a Pinner resident, has been familiar with the hospice for a long time. She recalls visiting a friend’s father over 25 years ago and remembers how peaceful the hospice felt.
At reception, Reena meets people during some of their toughest moments. “It’s not the easiest of circumstances for them,” she says.
For her, the role is about reassurance and empathy.
“Sometimes all people need is someone to guide them, without asking too many questions, and just showing empathy. Even a simple smile can work wonders.”
She values the hospice’s welcoming environment, describing it as a great community where everyone shares the same goal.
Reena has been volunteering for almost three years and encourages others to consider joining, noting the rewarding and inclusive experience of being part of the team.
