Caring for people in Harrow and Brent

Sara chooses to make every day count

When Harrow’s Sara Body was diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2021, she decided to stay positive.

Although chemotherapy has been unable to stop the cancer spreading to her liver and lungs, Sara remains focused on making the most of every day.

“There are going to be good days and bad days,” she says. “When you have cancer, make the most of what you’ve got, whatever time that is.”

After being referred to St Luke’s Hospice last autumn, Sara says the support she has received has transformed her life.

“They can’t do enough for you here. They understand what you’re going through.

“When you go into hospital, you’re a patient with a condition. When you come here, you’re a whole person.”

St Luke’s has provided equipment for Sara’s home, as well as wellbeing sessions and support groups. These have given her the opportunity to meet other people facing similar challenges.

“Cancer can be quite isolating, and meeting other patients, seeing how they’re coping and learning together… that’s a good thing.”

Sara says the hospice also supports her husband, Stephen, and daughter, Victoria.

“It’s an inclusive family. You’re not just on your own. If St Luke’s didn’t exist, I don’t know what I would do. Sometimes you need that personal touch.”
