Caring for People in Harrow & Brent

St Luke’s Bereavement Support Team wins Harrow Heroes Team of the Year Award

St Luke’s Bereavement Support Team was awarded the Harrow Heroes Team of the Year Award at the Harrow Heroes Awards on Wednesday, 11 September. Organised by Harrow Council, the annual event recognises the outstanding efforts of local volunteers, groups, and organisations that go above and beyond to support the community. Held at the historic Great Barn at Headstone Manor, it brought together local volunteers, sponsors, and dignitaries to celebrate exceptional contributions.

This award highlights the vital role our Bereavement Support Team plays in offering compassionate care to individuals and families across Harrow and Brent. Their dedication ensures that no one faces grief alone, and St Luke’s Hospice is incredibly proud of their achievement.

Patricia McCrossan, Head of Patient and Family Support and Therapies, shares: “We are extremely proud to achieve this award and it is a meaningful acknowledgement of the wonderful care and support our trained bereavement volunteers provide. We continue to be impressed by the outstanding commitment of our volunteers to training, supervision, and supporting bereaved members of our community. Thanks also to Rhonda Culshaw, Bereavement Lead and the Patient and Family Support team.”

Last winter, St Luke’s launched an appeal to our community to support the Bereavement Support team. During this campaign, Elizabeth, one of our trained bereavement support volunteers, shared her insights on the profound impact this service has on the local community:

“Being able to support someone’s journey of grief and make a positive difference to their week is very special and humbling. It’s inspiring to see how people have the strength and answers to cope within them, and our bereavement sessions help to unlock this.”

Jason, who received bereavement support from St Luke’s, also highlighted how the sessions made a difference in his life:

“I generally always feel better after our support sessions. It has made a difference.

Grief is delicate and tough. People say ‘life goes on’ but you might not be ready for that or even want that. It’s needing something to help you get there and St Luke’s bereavement support sessions helped me to do just that.”

St Luke’s Hospice is deeply grateful to everyone whose support makes this work possible, enabling us to be there for families when they need it most.
