Caring for people in Harrow and Brent

Carers Week 2026: Supporting the people who care

Carers Week, taking place from 8–14 June, shines a spotlight on the millions of unpaid carers across the UK who support family members, friends and loved ones every day.

At St Luke’s Hospice, Stella Murray, Senior Social Worker, sees first-hand how caring responsibilities can affect every part of a person’s life.

“Many carers don’t realise they are carers,” said Stella.

“They see themselves as a husband, wife, son, daughter or friend simply doing what needs to be done.

“But caring can have a huge impact on every part of their lives.”

This year’s theme, Building Carer Friendly Communities, recognises the vital role carers play and the importance of ensuring they feel supported, valued and appreciated.

Carers can face financial pressures, exhaustion, sleep deprivation, isolation and emotional stress. Many find they have little time for friends, hobbies or even their own health and wellbeing.

At St Luke’s, caring for carers is an important part of the support provided to families across Harrow and Brent.

The hospice helps carers access advice, assessments and support services through organisations such as Harrow Carers, Brent Carers, social services and Citizens Advice.

The hospice also offers Carers Retreat Days, home visits and ongoing support through its Patient and Family Support Services team.

“It’s really important that carers access help and support before things reach crisis point,” Stella explained.

“There is support available and people don’t have to manage everything on their own.”

A key message of Carers Week is that carers need caring too.

Taking time to rest, asking for help and looking after their own wellbeing is not selfish – it is essential. Whether it is support from family, neighbours, community groups or professional services, small acts of help can make a big difference.

As Stella’s message to carers makes clear: “Do not be on your own. There is support out there and we are here to support you from St Luke’s.”

This Carers Week, we thank all carers across Harrow and Brent for everything they do. Your compassion, dedication and kindness make an enormous difference every day.
