Diya’s devotion to St Luke’s should inspire us all
By Jo Pearce, Director of Fundraising and Communications, St Luke’s Hospice
At just 13 years old, Diya is about to complete her ninth Starlight Walk for St Luke’s Hospice.
It’s a staggering achievement for anyone, let alone someone barely into their teens. But what’s even more powerful is the story behind the number.
Diya’s journey with the Starlight Walk didn’t start when her mum, Bharti, joined St Luke’s as a staff member. It started before that when Bharti was a supporter herself, raising money and walking through the night as part of a family tradition rooted in love, gratitude, and community.
And Diya, aged just five, wanted to be part of it.
She may have been small in stature, but her spirit was huge. From that first walk, Diya was hooked. The buzz of the music at the start line, the henna, the hot drinks, the friendly volunteers cheering her on – every step became part of a cherished ritual. And she didn’t take the easy route. While others chose the five-mile option, Diya proudly took on the full nine miles, year after year.
She’s raised nearly £2,000 so far, and this year, she’s committed to raise at least £900 – £100 for every walk she’s completed. It’s her way of making this year extra special.
Bharti has her own reasons for walking. She knows the care provided on the wards at St Luke’s. She’s seen loved ones cared for here, including Diya’s great-uncle. And now, as a valued member of the team, Bharti continues to walk – this year training for an awe-inspiring Saharan Challenge – two marathons (84km) over two days!
What unites Bharti and Diya is simple: a belief in giving back. A desire to walk side by side, quite literally, for a cause that means everything to them.
In a world where people often feel powerless, this family reminds us that small acts – like signing up for a charity walk – can ripple outwards. They create tradition. They spark hope. They raise vital funds that help us care for local patients and their families, today and tomorrow.
So here’s my message to you: be more Diya. Be more Bharti. Join them.
Whether you walk five miles or nine, with friends or on your own, it all makes a difference. The Starlight Walk is about honouring memories, celebrating life, and shining a light for those who need us most.
And who knows? Maybe your one walk will become nine.
The Starlight Walk on 14 June is a fun and emotional night-time walk through the streets of Harrow and Brent, raising money to support patients and families cared for by St Luke’s Hospice. Choose between a 5- or 9-mile route and join hundreds of walkers lighting up the night for a great cause.
