Shilpa Bhudia: I’m running the London Marathon in memory of Misha

Shilpa Bhudia reveals the emotional inspiration behind her decision to run the London Marathon to raise vital funds for St Luke’s Hospice

I’m running the London Marathon for St Luke’s Hospice in memory of my cousin, Misha Hirani.

She passed away there about a year and a half ago, and it was only then that I truly saw the incredible work they do.

The care wasn’t just for her, it was for the whole family.

This was my first time entering the London Marathon ballot, and I knew the chances were slim.

I went in with the mindset that if it’s meant to be, it will be. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a place, so I reached out to St Luke’s about a charity spot.

If I was going to run a marathon, it had to be for a cause that meant something to me.

After not hearing anything for two months, I assumed it wasn’t meant to be… until I got the call.

I remember just crying and thinking, this is it, it’s meant to be.

Not only do I get to run my first marathon, but I get to do it for a charity that means so much to me and my family.

Training for this marathon has been a huge step up from a half.

It’s pushed me both physically and mentally.

I’ve now completed all my long runs, including 27k and 32k and I cried after the 32k.

There have been tough runs. One in particular stands out, it was cold, wet, and windy. I got splashed by a car, was completely soaked, and just wanted to go home… but still had 10k left.

Then I ran past the hospice.

I looked up, reminded myself of my WHY, and kept going.

That moment has stayed with me.

This journey has tested me, but it’s also built resilience and purpose.

I also organised a wellness event, bringing people together for a morning of fitness, yoga and a sound bath, all in support of my fundraising.

It was such a wholesome morning, and seeing everyone leave smiling meant so much.

With the support of my friends, family, and community, I’ve raised £5,097 so far.

I know when I cross that finish line, it will mean everything — for Misha, for St Luke’s, and for me.
